Food for Space-A thought: here are some tidbits of information that are very useful in planning your Space-A adventure. 1. Look at our historical chart in our photos section. It shows when the best time to try and travel is. -Statistically, there are more open seats during the second half of each month. -Normally over a long holiday(Memorial, Labor, 4th of July) there are more open seats available. -Hardest to try and travel during the summer. That is heavy PCS season and the time when those that are stationed overseas try and take their holidays back in the states. 2. Space-A travel is not a guarantee. You may or may not get selected for a seat(if any). Seat availability varies with each mission...as does the amount of other travelers trying their hand at Space-A. -Plan ahead....dont wait til the last day of your leave to try and get back. Try for the first available mission heading in the direction you wish to travel. If that doesnt happen, you wont have to wait as long. We typically only fly 3 times per week. Have a plan B, C, and D. 3. Space-A baggage limits are: 2 checked bag per person, not to exceed 70 lbs each and 2 carry-on items(must fit in carry-on sizer). 4. It costs only $17.50 per person to travel CONUS to OCONUS. That can be cash or credit card. It is approximately $35.00 to fly OCONUS to CONUS. The extra charge is a customs fee. 5. Dont count on Space-A to be your ticket back. The odds are not always in your favor. Check our 72-hour schedule to see our mission locations and tentative seat availability. 6. Typically there is a 10 - 20% no-show on duty passengers. If we post that there are 10T(10 tentative seats), you can almost bet there will be 20+. A good number to add to any of our tentative seat release number is 10(most often more though). 7. Make sure you have all of your ducks in a row...up-to-date travel authorizations(they do expire), valid military ID card(for anyone over 10 years old), and passports for dependents, civilians, and retirees. 8. Our office is located behind bag claim #5 and is open every day til 1600. On days prior to flight days, we stay open all night until midnight(the day prior to the flight). You can mark yourself present in our office up to 24 hours prior to the mission you wish to travel on. If you dont make that cut-off, our counters open @0130. 9. Roll-call starts promptly at 0430 the day of the flight. You MUST mark yourself present prior to 0415. v/r Tim Sanders
