*** For Istanbul Şehir Univeristy Students *** Today, an Open Forum was organized at the West Campus to discuss the recent increase in food prices, dorm rents, tuition fees and other related issues. Hundreds of students participated in the forum where they were informed about the prices at other (private) universities after explaining the situation briefly in English and Turkish and a future action plan was proposed. Here is the answer to many students who couldnt attend the event asked me to explain the decision taken: Why the forum was organized? University administration including the Rector and General Secretary refused to listen to us and accept our legitimate demands. The goal of this organization was gathering students at one place, making them aware of the stubbornness of the university and listening to them. To pressurize the university, this was the last option we had. Apparently, the attempt was successful. What was decided? A boycott plan was put forward which was accepted at the university. This plan includes the BOYCOTT of Yemekhane (dining hall) and all cafes (more, crown, box) as well as Bakkals (grocery shops) at Istanbul Şehir University. Where would you eat if you are hungry during the boycott? The students volunteers will provide alternative meals. Buffets (büfe) will be opened at the campuses and good quality food will be provided. No students will be compelled to pay a specific amount of money. Instead, contribution boxes will be installed and whoever wants will contribute to keep the plan running. You can contribute 1 TL or you can give 100 TL, it is up to you. What will be the result? University will face economic/market crisis and think about the demands of the students. If the alternative food plan is actively endorsed by the students (which I expect will happen), within one week university will accept our certain demands and students will be provided with the subsidies and discounts on food items as well as on dorm rents and tuition fees. Why are we doing this? Though most of the volunteers are full scholarship students, they are still human and true Şehirian. Despite of having scholarship, they are standing with their friends who have partial scholarships and even no scholarship at all. At the end, everyone is more or less affected by the prices increment. Şehir is our home. We take it as an institution that provides us the best possible opportunities to excel in academic life. One of the luxuries provided by Şehir was economical meals but as the prices have been increased, it has become hard for the students to fill their bellies. I hope, my friends hope and we all hope that the university administration will take our demands seriously and pay proper attention to the matter. Thanks to all who participated in the Open Forum already, thanks to the volunteers and advance thanks to those who will join us and make the boycott campaign successful. Dont forget to add #ŞehirdeBoykot to your social media statuses.
