.....For Justice...take a minute to meditate today! FRIDAY At the time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, who we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word. The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, among the seven. - Acts 6:1-5 Lawrence was chief of the seven deacons of the congregation at Rome, the seven men who, like Stephen and his companions, were in charge of administering the church budget, particularly with regard to the care of the poor. In 257, the emperor Valerian began a persecution aimed chiefly at the clergy and the laity of the upper classes. All Church property was confiscated and meetings of Christian were forbidden. The bishop of Rome, Sixtus II, and most of his clergy were executed on August 7, 258, and Lawrence on the 10th. Lawrence had agreed to surrender the wealth of the Church to the Roman prefect in three days. He assembled the sick, the aged, and the poor, the widows and orphans of the congregation, presented them to the perfect, and said, “these are the treasures of the Church.” - James Kiefer Fast from non-committal. Follow the example of Stephen and Lawrence by defending and supporting the poor and loving with all our hearts.
