For SOTD No. 159 we travel to sunny Liverpool the home of The Hummingbirds, who are currently Liverpools band of the year. This great 5-piece play a excellent updated mix of Mersey beat, Skiffle and Indie Folk. Also they are very good songwriters and musicians in their own right. You have the feeling when you see them live, that this must have been a similar experiance to watching the early Beatles at the Cavern Club. They have great energy and are a lot of fun to watch. The song today is a lovely cover of an early Quarrymen hit called In spite of all the danger written by Paul McCatney and George Harrison. youtu.be/BJiTl-rBpFY The Hummingbirds are Jay Davies (Vocals/Guitar), Matty Brougham (Rhythm Guitar), Mic Kountis (Guitar/Backing Vocals), Richard Smith (Backing Drums/Backing Vocals) and Ryan Lewis (Bass) Heavily influenced by music from a simpler time, The Hummingbirds grew up on the streets of Merseyside, capturing that unmistakable Liverpool twang that has resulted in the band winning the Liverpool Music Award “One to Watch 2013” in their first year as well as being tipped for The Mercury Music prize. With a unique Modern-Skiffle guitar sound The Hummingbirds give a passing nod to their Merseybeat heritage but mix it up with a Folk rhythm and Country style. Their songs reflect current social themes with Scouse wit, humour and a cutting edge. The band sits comfortably within the new retro music movement that is gathering momentum nationally and providing the music scene with a fresh sound. As they spread their wings they are winning hosts of new fans wherever they play (20,000 twitter & Facebook followers to date). Audience reaction to their live shows has been outstanding, people quickly connect to the infectious melodies and hook-laden choruses, which uplift and engage. The stage presence and charm of the band is for all to see as a potent musical force. The Hummingbirds released their debut EP last year and its great. If you havent got it yet, please treat yourself to a copy :) The band have recently successfully crowd-funded their debut album through a Pledge campaign. The album is currently in the mixing phase and hopefully should be released early next year. After great gigs at the O2 Islington and The Garage, the Hummingbirds return to London at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen on the 17th October....pop along....you wont be disappointed :) If you go, please say hello to them, they are a great group of lads. Oh and did we mention that they are also Wayne Rooneys favourite band :) wearethehummingbirds/
