For The Spanish speakers, who claim no African blood or afflictions******** AD711, Iberia there was no unified Spain back then. Which lead by the Muslim army, which quickly conquered most of the peninsula. Their capital was at Cordoba, and while there were many changes in the Muslim government there over time, they were the dominant force in Iberia for about 500 years. A turning point is the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, when King Alphonso VIII of Castile, King Sancho VII of Navarre and King Pedro II of Aragon (three Christian kingdoms in the North of what is now Spain) defeated the Muslims near Toledo. From 711 until 1492 Muslims, referred to as Moors, occupied parts of what is today Spain and Portugal, and small parts of modern France. The boundaries of the Muslim territory varied over time. The Muslims crossed the Straits of Gibraltar in AD711 and by AD720 they had established the Country of Al-Andalus. The Muslims stayed until the final push of the Spanish Reconquista when the last Muslim stronghold of Granada was overrun in 1492. Many of the beautiful buildings that they left behind them still remain. Source(s): Historical History of the Crusades. Angus Konstam.
