For a few hours Tuesday, I played the part of a recently released convict, trying to take the first steps toward finding my way in society. Blackhawk Technical College was host for a Returning Inmate Simulation sponsored by Madison Urban Ministries. Ministry volunteers manned booths representing various agencies or organizations. Most of the “returning inmates’’ were criminal justice students. Under the simulation, I portrayed a Native American man who had been incarcerated for decades for a serious crime. Once out, I had to find work, housing, make restitution, pay child support, meet with my parole agent etc. It was a simulation, of course, and therefore the acute frustration I experienced was tempered by the fact that I was playing a game. The return of real inmates is not a game and we all have a stake in their success among us. I think the simulation was a valuable experience. I was joined by “fellow convicts’’ Neil Deupree, Steve Howland and Billy Bob Grahn among others.
