For a town ranked in the USA in the top 10 or at worst in the top 20 for 20 years, the understated fact is that it has been in economic decline for that entire period. Who has asked why such an idyllic place should be so shunned? Could it be that living 10 miles from a rusty Nuke could play into such an effect, or is that the entire cause of the effect— what else would educated and candid opinion suggest? Of course, the current levy to training for fire and rescue services, and support of boys and girls clubs and other local resources, such as full page ads in newspapers has been solid and substantial and will be missed. Albeit the community seems to have been reduced to a single sugar-daddy and kept barefoot and increasingly jobless. Corporate support and 500 jobs will fade away over time and the challenge to the community is to replace them with, say, fifty new businesses who might relocate here with ten jobs apiece, straightforward reasons for doing so, attested even by the Smithsonian’s report of our value.
