For all of our atheist, agnostic, skeptic, humanist, freethinker, friends... What kind of label do you use to refer to your beliefs, or lack thereof? Lately, Ive been leaning more toward the label rationalist, instead of atheist. First, atheist is defining ourselves by what were not (believers in a supernatural being who created the universe). There are a lot of things Im *not,* but I dont base my identity, or sense of self, on those things. Second, the religious majority that we find ourselves living among have made a simple, descriptive term, into an insult (in their own minds). Third, I think a positive term (describing what one *is* rather than what theyre *not*) makes a discussion less confrontational, and gives the discussion direction.
