For all of you who have been wondering and asking about Speckles: after being terrorized and almost being killed by an owl about two weeks ago, Valhallas most popular turkey hen is almost completely healed! Shes still missing most of her tail feathers... however, the many deep wounds across her back (hidden in these photos) and the big raw claw-marked patch on her right side are clean, dry, and free of any obvious infections. Shes also back with the main turkey flock now, takes time to visit her very-best-buddy BlineGai down at Hospital Row every day or so, and against all odds Speckles can even fly a little despite her many injuries. These two pictures were taken yesterday when she flew up onto the open Greenhouse railing just outside the living room; her devious goal at that moment plainly involved leaping onto Eriks favorite easy chair to leave him a very special postcard -- but I was able to intercept her with a camera first. She tap-danced on the railing when I busted her, cried and pouted at the sight of the easy chair just out of her reach, yelled for Erik, pecked at my lens, called me horrible names out of frustration, gave a lengthily oral dissertation about the horrors of owls in the dark, artfully crapped a couple of times, sang about the glories of beating all the chickens to the stale tortilla chips Id thrown out the front door, loudly questioned the meaning of the American Flag flapping in the wind over her head, and very daintily crapped again for general emphasis. In short, Speckles is once again A1-OK and very sincerely thanks all her many fans and supporters for asking about her status. -- Chris
