For anyone who isnt quite sure what I do for a living, this is it. I, and the attorneys I train and supervise, represent the Ms. Taylors of the world in their efforts to get their children back. This is not the exceptional case, this is what we see every day: parents who would not be in a situation where people are judging their parenting if only they had a little more money, for child care, for mental health treatment, for a babysitter so they can take a night off and yeah, maybe have a few drinks or smoke a little pot. If only we lived in a society where poverty was understood so no child had to be raised by parents who have to deal every day with overwhelming injustice, fear, anger and rage. If only what benefits they DO receive werent used as political ping pong balls by capital dwellers so that theyre here one day and gone the next. If only the 49% beneath the top 1% realized their circumstances are much, much closer to Ms. Taylors than to those whose taxes they refuse to increase. For all of you who work with me in this system, I am proud to say that the legal representation you provide to every parent without charge is vastly superior to that provided by the most expensive privately retained counsel around. I dont know how we do it, but every day I see it. Hopefully, soon our governor and legislature will see it too and pay you something commensurate to what those at the other end of counsel table make.
