For anyone who loves to write, this profile of Laura Hillenbrand (Unbroken, Seabiscuit), has much to offer. Read the whole piece by all means but then study the dive into writing process just over half way in: the generational shift characterized by nonfiction authors who get out of the way of the writing by avoiding stylistic flourishes; how Hillenbrand carefully arranges facts and details to impart the same narrative urgency as kandy-kolored adjectives and verbal pirouettes; how her confinement to her home for health reasons led to a different writing process which, in turn, has made her writing so distinctive — including reliance on telephone interviews and original, tactile source materials such as old newspapers.
