For days now, I have been questioning my career choice. Sometimes, all the disappointments and exhaustion are just too much for me. All the negativities play with my emotions and sometimes alter my views. But who can blame me? Living a life of a teacher is definitely far from easy. Imagine living every single day of your existence in school, when in fact everyone wants to graduate just to escape the four walls of the classroom. Waking up early is already a torture, how much more if you have to stay up late to study every night! Studying is already a part of our routine, to the point where learning ceases to be an adventure and becomes a mere a part of our daily chores. We dont even have free time to spare for ourselves, because we usually bring our work at home- papers, forms, and many more. Our social life is almost non existent, because our weekends are spent in universities for our post-grad degrees. In school, we have multiple roles as parents, counselors, mediator, lawyer, doctor, etc. And dont get me started with the abuse in our vocal chords for talking non-stop for 8 hours straight plus the varicose veins developing in our legs for standing for so long. Well, difficult is a very light word to describe our agony. However, all our sufferings are actually well-compensated, not by our salaries but with the happiness and sense of fulfillment and purpose that we feel at the end of the day. Yes, we have a better salary than most, but almost 50% actually go to our teaching materials and classrooms. But all our frustrations vanish when we see our students eyes sparkle with their new discoveries. Our exhaustion dissipates when our children say thank you maam for everything or maam, you are our inspiration. Words cant explain the heart-bursting feeling when we hear a word of gratitude and appreciation. True, teachers will never be rich. But our real treasures lie in the success of our students. Their smiles, love, and gratitude remind us of our purpose. Our passion for teaching will continue to burn as long as there are students who need light to guide their path for the future. Gods little angels are, indeed, the teachers simple joys.
