For immediate release April 24, 2014 State of Emergency Declared in Trent Hills Trent Hills, ON – At 11:00 a.m. today, Mayor Hector Macmillan declared a state of emergency in the Municipality of Trent Hills due to flooding. Though significant flooding has been present for over a week, the situation has only now exhausted municipal resources and warrants this declaration. According to Mayor Macmillan, when regular municipal operations become affected and continuity of services is an issue, its time to declare. Further rationale behind this declaration include the recent closure of several impassable roads and the necessity to deviate from normal municipal purchasing policies to quickly acquire flood control services and supplies. Several road closures have been implemented in Trent Hills including: Muskie Mile Lane- impassable, completely closed Cedar Drive - temporarily closed, local traffic only Bradley Bay Road - temporarily closed, local traffic only First Line East - temporarily closed, local traffic only It is advisable to use caution when travelling all roads with water coverage throughout the Municipality. To date the majority of municipal staff have been dedicated to flood and water control and as a result regular operations have been impacted. Many Public Works Department staff resources are now being shifted back to their regular duties to address the rough road issues and put graders into operation. The Lower Trent Conservation Authority has advised that the rate of rise in water is expected to slow over the weekend in many of the flooded areas. However, there is precipitation in the forecast for this region which may impact water levels. Mayor Macmillan went on to say that volunteers are not required at this time, and well continue to monitor the situation and respond where we can to help affected residents.
