For many years I have decided not to use sugar for my cooking at home. Sugar is best avoided as much as possible, although it is hard to avoid completely as it is commonly used in restuarants, take aways etc. On radio 4 I listened to an investigation on the effects of sugar. Some scientists agree with my position and make the case very well. Others point out equally convincingly that the reality is more complex and can be overstated by people like me. I am left not knowing really what to think. I prefer my precautionary principle, until the science progresses further. One area where there is a consensus is that sugary and fizzy drinks are the worst choice of sugar consumption. Sugar in food is filling so eventually you are likely to stop. Drinks are less filling so you are likely to consume more sugar, and it certainly is the case that the more sugar you consume the more harmful it is.
