For me, Change Maryland’s Third Way contains three essential elements. Inclusiveness: It’s time to engage every citizen who wants to get involved in the policy process. Policymaking should not be left exclusively in the hands of an oligarchy of anointed Annapolis lobbyists and lawmakers. Efficiency: Maryland’s taxpayers can no longer afford the unsustainable growth of state government. It is time to look more closely at state programs and departments themselves, because people should always come before government. Real change: Changing the way state government operates will breed greater accountability and better results. That can be accomplished through increased transparency, tougher disclosure and ethics laws, and a renewed focus on building Maryland’s private sector and business climate.
