For most of us home was around the corner from School 12, so we’d run to our houses, eat a quick lunch, all to allow us plenty of time to play in the schoolyard before returning to class. And these were some of the games we played. 1) Slaughter Ball: basically a stick (the “ball”) was thrown into the air; someone grabbed it and ran like hell. And he kept running until he was tackled. The boys would dive and pile onto the fallen runner and yell “… pile”. It was a wonder anyone would grab the stick just to be rewarded with a huge pile of kids on top of them, but they did. No winners. 2) Jousting: we had no name for this game, but essentially it was a piggy back free for all, with all using any means to knock the others down. The last piggy back pair standing was the victor. 3) The Line-Up: again, we had no name for this game. Basically, boys joined hands and spread out as much as possible into a long line the width of the schoolyard, and in straight-line formation ran across the playground from one end to the other, mowing down any kids unfortunate to be in the way, all the while yelling an Indian war-whoop in unison. No winner’s only losers. 4) Buck-buck: apparently this was an old Navy game given this name. The boys lined up as follows: the “pillow” was someone who stood with his back against a vertical surface, the school wall or a telephone pole. A bunch of kids would bend over and link together, their backs making one long back. The opposing team would run and leap-frog cowboy fashion onto the back of this “horse”, trying to get as close as possible to the “pillow”. The round finished when the “horse” beneath collapsed. The winner was the team that could support the most added body weight on their backs before collapsing. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it? As we became more “mature,” we moved on to pitching baseball cards against the school wall, then pennies and nickels, then played blackjack for more “serious” money.
