For most people Attenborough is the director of his Oscar Winning film Gandhi ... for others he is the brother of David Attenborough the nature exploring documentary maker of equal fame. For me he is first and foremost Frenchy Burgoyne in Robert Wises Sand Pebbles , an epic high-seas adventure mixing romance, racism and action set in revolution-ravaged China in 1926. He was to co-star with his pal Steve McQueen again in The Great Escape. But that particular role in the Sand Pebbles which I saw on Iranian TV before the revolution had a profound impact on me as a child because unlike most War Movies involving Americans it didnt glorify military sacrifice. It also had a scene in which the American embassy is taken over by the Boxers ( Chinese Revolutionaries). Steve McQueens character ends up having to defend the embassy and ultimately - sorry for the spoiler - dies in action on what theoratically is American soil ... youtube/watch?v=6h60_CwmF5g I often wondered if those Iranians students who stormed the US Embassy in Tehran werent indirectly inspired by the movie. Who knows ? ... May He Rest in Peace ... Attenborough on the Sand Pebbles : youtube/watch?v=OJedk-Wwa_E
