For my Beloved. Om Gate Gate Paragate Parasamgate Bodhi Svaha. Thank you for taking me beyond the beyond and showing me what Is. This is a brief transcript from an American Buddhist teacher I was given a few years ago and am reminded of now:: THE HEART SUTRA A teaching on the Sutra of the Heart of Transcendant Knowledge Its in this process of muddling along —its in all the falling down— that the courage and the kindness and the compassion and the strength really comes. And the flexible mind. Then he goes on and he talks about the mantra. And the mantra is: OM GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SVAHA. In other words, a way to practice the profound prajnaparamita is actually to say this mantra —as well as the on-going practice of continually letting go, or letting be, training in a flexible, open, ready mind. But also, one can chant this mantra. By the way, theres a lot of teaching on the prajnaparamita, and Im not going to go into all of that. Some of them are very, very long —twenty thousand lines and so forth. But the pith of it, the heart of it, is in this sutra. Thats why its called the Heart Sutra because its like the pith of all these teachings on prajnaparamita. Then its said that the pith, or the heart, of the Heart Sutra is the mantra. That everything that is said in this whole sutra is actually reiterated and encapsulated in the mantra. Rinpoches translation is: OM, GONE (GATE is gone), GONE, (then PARAGATE) GONE BEYOND, (PARASAMGATE) GONE COMPLETELY BEYOND, (BODHI) AWAKE, (SVAHA) SO BE IT. So: OM, GONE, GONE, GONE BEYOND, GONE COMPLETELY BEYOND, AWAKE, SO BE IT. Theres lots of translations of this, and one is: OM, TRANSCENDING, EVER TRANSCENDING, TRANSCENDING EVEN TRANSCENDING, TRANSCENDING EVEN TRANSCENDING OF TRANSCENDING, SUCHNESS, SO BE IT. What is wonderful about this mantra is that it is not a description of some fruition. Its actually a description of a journey that we are all on. We are all on this journey of going, going, going beyond, going even beyond. No matter where we are, we can move on to the next beyond. Do you see? Its not a description of: I made it! Its like this! Its a description of: OM, groundless, even more groundless, can it get more groundless than this, Oh my gosh, its ultimately groundless, theres no ground!, and then BODHI could be translated as Aiiiiiiiii..... [or.... Ahhhhhhhhh...] So be it. [laughter] I do better in my life when I think or try to remember the mantra and what it represents. Radically accepting EVERYTHING that arises, and comes my way. Accepting the world, in love, in compassion, even in its spinning churning dualities and polarization of opposites and the warring in between. Somehow its all Gods will and the problem is me, that I dont want to accept this Earth and Mankind upon it much. I have other ideas for God. And of course He doesnt listen, well he listens but laughs I suppose and ignores me. So Ive finally gotten to the point of listening to His silence. Immense silence. And slowly I turn more and more towards Him and the Light which is Truth and Freedom, even while the world chaotically spins in this dark alive quiet galaxy that is moving at speeds of light I suppose, towards WHERE? But I find peace in His silence more and more. And a sweet acceptance that things are precisely the way He intended whether I like it or not. Im not fighting God nearly as much now since Ive been sick. Anyway this song by the BEST band in the Universe is for my Beloved. That when the world ends, well be okay, even better than okay.
