For my FRIENDS that are not on my Healthy U Page this is a great exercise training question. Take a minute and read it if you are weight training or thinking about it. Question is from one of our followers: ve recently started lifting weights and Ive been told I should lift 3 times a week, for instance Mondays, upper....Wednesday, core....Friday , lower. I dont understand how training one group of muscles once a week can be beneficial. What is the most effective schedule for weight training? Judy Siegel, Ph.D, Exercise Physiology Answered: You are wise to question whether once a week training for each of the muscle groups could be beneficial. Maintaining your present level of muscle mass and strength is the most you could hope for. Your trainer needs to explain his/her program going forward. This is a barenot very good starting point. Ask what his/her training has been. The answer should be college with a major in a biology related topic which included anatomy and physiology. His (or her) certification should be from National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). If no college, find another trainer, no matter how marvelous they look. I will post an article outlining a comprehensive beginning weight-training program. My background? Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology, UCONN.
