For my children and many younger people, 9-11 was the date they felt suddenly aware of our shared vulnerability, of our national vulnerability. We all awoke to a different place in the world. For my parents, this awakening occurred at Pearl Harbor. For some of us, it occurred at the Kennedy assassination, or M.L. King, Jr assassination, or the Kent State shootings. For some children in Santa Rosa the shocking, wake-up event was the shooting of their friend. We are in each of our lives shocked awake. Then we act as individuals and sometimes as a nation. Today we remember the shared awakening of the attacks on NY, and by harmonics, the other shared awakenings in our lives. May we all have a moment of peace and reflection on this day for everyone who has lost lives, and for those of us who remain. May we act upon all our rude awakenings with wisdom, patience, compassion, justice and fairness - after we have cried and rent our clothing. I pray for blessings upon us on this day of awakening.
