For my friends and family I would like to share something about my personal history in regards to Judaism and the high holidays. My mother Miriam Rimland, or Matilda Weinstein (her maiden name) grew up in a very tiny town in Poland. The town grew geese for the feathers that were made into blankets, and the schmaltz (geese fat) that was eaten in the cold winters.. her father Yeshayahu Weinstein was a cantor and a butcher (shochet). He died of cancer at the age of 44. he was a handsome man with beautiful piercing black eyes. Her mother was older and a very strong willed woman. My mother was the second daughter out of 3 daughters. She was very rebellious and joined the Zionists movement and made aliya to Israel when she was 17 years old. She built the land of Israel and was a socialist living on a kibbutz. But as she grew older her memories of her religious father and Jewish upbringing flooded her and although on the socialist kibbutz where i grew up there was no mentioned of religion and no synagogue, she prayed in our house with an old siddur (prayer book) she managed to find. She would cry on Yom Kippur her heart out begging for selichot, for forgiveness from God.. and i her daughter went to the Jewish Theological Seminary, studied Talmud and prayers and later in life became a Jewish chaplain..when i hear Avvinu Malkenu i cry like she did..and my son Jordan is writing his dissertation on circumcision.. Le dor Vador, from a generation to generation..
