For my friends outside Hong Kong, please pay attention to whats happening here. Students have been protesting for real democracy, to elect their own Chief Executive (like a president) rather than accepting those provided by the Chinese government. As of today Pro-China thugs are inciting violence, molesting female students, and generally causing chaos in what have been called the most polite protests in history. This started around noon and police more or less stood amongst the attacks for 9 hours before starting to make a handful of arrests. Pro-democracy demonstrators followed some of the arrested thugs to the police station and watched the police release them into a taxi. Videos have emereged of people being offered money, and its thought the gangs are being paid by police or the Hong Kong government. Watching the news filter out from the street, a lot of the international press has been hesitant to criticize the police (especially in America due to local taboo). Their headlines read that violence simply happened or that protesters fought each other. The reality is teenagers and peaceful protesters are being attacked by gangs and by all appearances its encouraged by our own police and government.
