Politicians will lie, cheat, and steal to win, but then the voters quickly become disillusioned because the lying, cheating, and stealing continues after the politician becomes elected. Even if he really thought that he could redeem his principles and act on them after the election, the fact that he was unable to run on his "principles" proves that he will never be able to lead with them or act in accordance with them while in office.
