For people interested in all aspects of life, being a photographer is quite a blessing. Some of my favourite photographic subjects are those you find outside of the mainstream sphere – the niche world where thousands of people gather in various subcultures, interest groups and enthusiast communities around something that the rest of the world typically does not understand. Take bodybuilding, for instance – an activity that transforms the human body so dramatically that it often evokes feelings of horror and outright disgust in people who do not share this aesthetical ideal. Many bodybuilders reach proportions that are so extreme that people have a hard time accepting that practitioners will do that to themselves. For the bodybuilders, however, it is about much more than just the end product that normal people see when they gasp in disbelief at impossibly muscular bodies. It is about years with a brutal training regime, strict diet, incredible discipline and everything else required by elite sports if you want to participate in high-level competitions. One of the greatest bodybuilders, Jay Cutler – not to be confused with the NFL player with the same name – has won the Mr. Olympia title four times and visited Copenhagen this weekend to promote his brand of bodybuilding nutritional supplements, Cutler Nutrition, together with the Danish fitness store and gym Loaded. Needless to say, fans were over the moon to meet their great idol – not least the ones who were lucky enough to get to work out with him in the evening.
