For so many years we stood on Broad Street in Philadelphia watching the Mummers parade... wed watch from the first wench brigade all through the very last string band... were talking a 12 hour long parade... we used the little mom and pop dry cleaning store to use the bathroom and warm up ... drink gallons of hot chocolate and eat soft pretzels heated over the subway grates... pop marched and my sis was one of the first women allowed to march with one of the string bands. It was all big secrets and a whole year of sewing... gluing. .. glitter. .. and bling galore. The big plumes and costumes were amazing... wed cheer for all the divisions.. and you would have Oh Dem Golden Slippers tune stuck in your head for days! The pageantry and pride of strutting up broad street has never been compromised by politics nor personalities! No big name movie stars here... just blue collar pride sweat and tears! I miss my Philadelphia traditions and the old neighborhood! Happy New Years...
