For some, it may be a challenge to explain Jim Webbs nuanced views on economic fairness and social justice, especially when so many will be committed to misunderstanding him in order to preserve the status quo and prevent any change that threatens established power. However, for those who can step of of their comfort zone for the sake of advancing freedom and fairness, it will be clear that Webb simply hopes to give opportunity to all our Citizens based on a fair assessment of needs and a just cause for supporting individuals and families who deserve it. By bringing attention to the issues facing poor and working class whites, he is offering a voice for groups of disadvantaged people who have no representation among those with the power to provide the support they need and the rewards of citizenship that they have undoubtedly earned. His fundamental argument that if youre poor and white, youre out of sight, while diversity programs unfairly advantage the more elite segments of minority populations, is not a knock against non-white people. In fact, his point is that whats good for disadvantaged whites is also good for disadvantaged non-whites. The system we have now is supposedly designed to support those in need, but it actually divides poor and working class citizens on racial and cultural lines while reinforcing the comfortable position of already advantaged people of all races. Simply put: economic fairness and social justice policies should target the economic and social standing of all our People and not be based on race and cultural diversity - certainly not when we are trying to build a post-racial society.
