For someone who spends so much time on the water Lauren Aiello has her feet planted solidly on the ground. Though the 19-year-old rower enjoyed a fantastic freshman season at the University of Central Florida, both on the water for the Orlando school and in the classroom, where she made the dean’s list, Aiello is not the type to be content with her successes and spend the off-season resting on her considerable laurels. Instead of taking a summer off from competition at the club level — she made all-conference and was Central Florida’s rower of the year, after all — the daughter of Dom and Christina Aiello was back in a boat within three weeks of returning home from school. A two-week trip to Italy, where the languages major made the rounds visiting her parents’ relatives in the Turin area, Aiello was at South Niagara Rowing Club getting ready for the Royal Canadian Henley Canadian championships. “I want to maintain my fitness. If I take the summer off, I am going to fall behind,” said the E.L. Crossley Secondary School graduate who is attending UCF on an athletic scholarship.
