For students of Karnatak University, Dharwad, here is some cheering news. They dont have to walk miles to visit various departments scattered all over the campus. For, the university plans to construct a multi-utility complex which will have 14 facilities under one roof. Now, students who are studying in different streams have a long trek to the administrative building which boasts of a Xerox facility and canteen. KUD campus is spread over 880 acres, some departments like Journalism and Mass Communication, MBA, MCA, Computer Science and Geology are located quite far from the administrative building and other departments are quite a distance from the central library, placement cell, auditorium and career guidance cell. S P Bagali, resident engineer, KUD, said the complex will have two floors in an area of 3,150 sqm and will be built at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore sanctioned by the University Grants Commission under the University Potential of Excellence programme. We need Rs 6 crore for the building, the remaining amount will be used for buying furniture and accessories, he said. The complex will house career guidance cell with digital library, hi-tech computer training stall, indoor auditorium (250 seats), open air theatre, student lounge, 24x7 reading hall, placement cell and personality development cell, food court with dining hall, hi-tech computer training stall, Centre for Scientific and Industrial Consultancy, xerox centre with internet facility, students innovation centre and office rooms, toilets, storeroom. Manju Bhadrashetti, doing second year in journalism, said: We have to walk around 1.5 to 2km to go to the Xerox facility or to the canteen or for any other work as our department is quite far from the central building. The complex will be a boon for the students. Fourteen facilities will be provided to students. We have completed the tender process and we will start the construction work near the administrative building soon. --- HB Walikar | vice-chancellor, KUD
