Gay host Graham Norton leads BAFTA nominations Stephen Frys documentary Out There, that saw him look at the world in LGBTI rights, was not nominated for the British television awards 07 April 2014 | By Elizabeth Stromme Gay Irish comic and presenter Graham Norton leads the BAFTA nominations, it was revealed today (7 April). The funny man who will also be hosting the ceremony on 18 May, his seventh time presenting the British television awards. Norton is nominated for Entertainment Performance, while BBC1 chat show is in the running for Comedy Entertainment Programme this year. Last year, Norton took home the first award. Gay illusionist Derren Brown is nominated for his show Derren Brown: The Great Art Robbery. Several people were hoping to see gay rights documentaries Stephen Fry: Out There and Dispatches: Hunted in the running for Best Documentary, however they were not eligible. In Out There, Fry addresses homophobia and travels to Uganda to meet people targeted by the new anti-gay legislation, and Dispatches: Hunted reports the horrendous conditions Russian gays are living under. Daniel Pearl, Commissioning Editor for Dispatches at Channel 4, told Gay Star News Hunted would be put forward for next years BAFTA nominations. ‘Hunted wasnt eligible this year - well put it in 2014/15 awards,’ Pearl said. Among the nominations for the Soap and Continuing Drama award is Coronation Street, with gay actor Charlie Condou who plays Marcus Dent in the series and EastEnders, who created headlines with the gay romance storyline last December. The announcement of the nominations is also the official opening of public voting for the Radio Times Audience Award. The Great British Bake Off, co-hosted by gay host Sue Perkins, and Gogglebox, which has several LGBTI stars, is among the shows in the running. Breaking Bad, Broadchurch, Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor and Educating Yorkshire are also nominated. This year’s ceremony will be held at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London on Sunday 18 May.
