For the last year The Modern Registered Manager journal has focused on the need to raise the profile of the care home and domiciliary care sector. The aim of the journal is to work in conjunction with other key initiatives, such as the work being undertaken by the National Skills Academy in attempting to raise the profile of registered managers. The conclusion drawn so far, after a year of implementation has been the following: “The care sector is not professionalized enough or in the same way that can be seen in the nursing and social work professions. (This echoes the findings of the National Skills Academy). That lack of professionalism or the perceived lack of professionalism is both undermining and devaluing to the care sector, especially in the areas for registered managers. We have a government which insists on having registration for most nursing and social work staff, yet does not insist on that same registration for registered managers the their care workers. As such this sends the message that these workers and what they do, does not have the same value or standing, even though they are working with people who have very high complex needs and vulnerable. What message does that send to the care home and home care sector?”
