It may seem crazy to bring up the word brush fire in January, - TopicsExpress

It may seem crazy to bring up the word brush fire in January, especially when temperatures are below freezing at night. But today, our partners with the Oregon Department of Forestry are fighting three fires in the Northwest part of the state. The first two fires are burning near Arch Cape along the coast; the third is burning outside Silverton. It is reported that the fires are burning in logging slash and range from 30-200 acres in size. How might this happen in the middle of winter? Well the lack of rain in Oregon has allowed brush and vegetation to become dry. Also the east wind that is giving us great views of the wonderful sun, has also added to drying out vegetation even further and lowering the humidity. Strong gusts also contribute to fire spreading very quickly. This is why we are asking anyone that is out conducting agricultural burning to be extra vigilant at keeping a clear space around your burn pile and always keep an eye on it. And as we type this, the National Weather Service of Portland has announced that there is a Red Flag Warning for the Northern Oregon Coast, which means conditions are favorable for fires to easily spread. Even though the warning doesn’t directly involve our response area, our crews have prepared their gear to fight brush fires.
