Went to the park to enjoy a nice day with Dazzle. Just as we were - TopicsExpress

Went to the park to enjoy a nice day with Dazzle. Just as we were starting to leave, I heard a kid start screaming bloody murder on the trail, sounded like he was really hurt seriously. I started down the trail, but could hear a man telling the kid he would be ok and they were getting closer. Guy emerges carrying said crying child. I asked if he was ok and the guy said no, he has a huge gash on his leg and I notice he has a sweatshirt (the kids) wrapped around the kids lower leg. I asked if he needed a first aid kit and he said yes. We were at the cars at this point and the guy laid the boy in the grass while I got my kit. He started unwrapping the leg while the kid resumed sounding like his leg was about to come off and I was pulling out the big gauze bandages and vet wrap. Dad is a bit frantic and asking if he should just go straight to the hospital instead of doing the first aid. Im expecting to see a horrific wound. Instead, its about a 1 long, clean edge cut just below the kids knee and it was only barely bleeding! It was deep enough to probably need a few stitches, but I put away the big gauze and pulled out a single butterfly bandaid. Kid was acting like I wanted to cut off his leg but I told him I was just going to put a bandaid on it. He had his arm over his eyes and refused to look the whole time. :-) Dad re-wrapped the sweatshirt over the wound (which was now closed thanks to the little bandaid) and then cleared a space on the back seat of his car so the kid could lie down on the way to the hospital. I told dad to take a deep breath, it wasnt a bad wound and the kid would be fine. He would likely need a couple stitches (which started the kid screaming again from the back seat) and that he didnt need to rush on his way to the hospital. And I told the kid if he was brave and didnt cry too much, dad might get him a cool toy. Suddenly, he didnt need to cry so much :-) Guy thanked me profusely and was on his way with a scared but now quiet kid. Lesson: If you dont have a well stocked first aid kit in your car with stuff for people and any pets you might have with you- GET ONE NOW! And if you need help deciding what is essential, I can give you a list. You never know when you might need it! I have used mine several times, both on myself and my dogs as well as for other people.
