For the market/audience to grow for a particular sport, motivation - TopicsExpress

For the market/audience to grow for a particular sport, motivation with respect to results is very important. You cannot expect to grab the eyeballs and attention of the people and commercial endorsements without giving them something better than what your predecessors managed. Consistency is also a big factor. Indian Hockey is a prime example of things going wrong because it was not able to keep up with the expectations of the spectators and thus, as the television grew in India helping Cricket to grow with it, Hockey faded away in oblivion. However, despite all the negativities around, people like Mary Kom, Sushil Kumar and Saina Nehwal etc. have consistently proven themselves. That’s the reason that slowly but surely they are getting their dues. Blaming Cricket for the misery of other sports is wrong. Cricket also has seen bad times but managed to sustain despite that. Hockey is finding its lost ground again. We have a Gold medal match against Pakistan in Asian Games tomorrow. A win here and it may motivate some young kid to pick up a hockey stick instead of a Cricket bat. Money should start flowing through as well. Good times ahead.
