I have a very sincere question for anyone who cares to read this, and for who may be more educated/informed than I am. Over the last two hours, Ive been in Hillsdale / Branch counties working. Both areas have substantial Amish population. While doing my estimate in Branch county, and Amish family drove by me on their horse and buggy. Being a nice guy, I smiled and waved. To my surprise, they all gave me angry, blank stares and the father sped up the horses down the road. I just thought, okay, whatever, they probably think Im going to hell because Im wearing modern clothes and my house is hooked up to electricity. Feeling sorry for my soul, they shunned me. But as they drove away, I looked up and their buggy was equipped with ELECTRIC BLINKERS!! And they were blinking! I was like, okay, moving on with my life now, I went back to work. Now I make my way into Jonesville, and I have to use the restroom so I ran into wal-mart. Low and behold, there is an Amish family grocery shopping. No big deal, until I look at what their buying... 20 2 liters of mountain dew, enough candy peanut butter cups to end world hunger, and 40 loaves of bread (among other things.) So here in lies my question: is it not completely against the basis of their religion to be doing these things? No no, we cant have electricity in our homes, thats a sin, but electricity on out buggies? No big deal. Or how about this other familys obvious poor eating habits? My question is: is this not blatant hypocrisy, or am I completely reading this wrong? This is not intended to bash a group of people or religion. Just trying to make sense out of what Ive seen today. Theres my food for thought today, better get back to work! Lol
