We are supporting the strike of 300 doctors in MAHARASTHTRA called by MARD.. We are with you. The indefinite strike by resident doctors at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) continued for the second day on Wednesday. Of the four major demands of the doctors, two have been partially accepted by the authorities while the other two are still being considered.(TOI) The strike was called by Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) on Monday evening after a resident doctor was beaten up by the relatives of a patient. Two people were arrested in the case under the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act on Tuesday. More than 300 resident doctors, however, continued with their strike on Wednesday as their major demands have not been fulfilled. We had asked for at least 54 security guards to be placed at various points at the hospital through the day. The Directorate of Medical Research and Education (DMER) authorities with whom we were in talks said that was a very high number. We came down to 30, but they only approved 20 posts. This is a very small number considering the expanse of the hospital and the number of buildings in the premises, said Dr Novhil Prabhubrahmankar, general secretary of MARD GMCH. Similarly, the number of CCTV cameras approved was 12 even as MARD had demanded 30 such cameras to be placed in the hospital premises. Two of the other demands were not considered by officials. One was appointment of more class IV workers. It directly affects the work of residents, as we end up doing their work and is also the reason why so many relatives come with every patient. Even a 30-bed ward has at least 200 people in it at a time. So, we are asking for restricted entry for patients relatives, at least in the wards, said president of GMCH MARD Dr Ayudh Magdum. MARD members say that they have decided to continue the strike because such incidents of violence against resident doctors have become a very regular occurrence across the state. They said that this time they would take back the strike only when the problems are solved once and for all. Meanwhile, GMCH has made arrangements for 50 people, including medical officers and non-clinical staff, to work instead of the 310 residents on strike, so that services at the hospital are not affected. However, if the strike is long drawn out, patient care at the hospital is sure to suffer.
