*For the particular attention of Zimbabweans/ex-Zimbabweans/Rhodesians: If I may ask some questions please, regarding a certain water weed that spread at an alarming rate in dams, lakes and other bodies of water in and around Salisbury/Harare around 1981-2. If I remember correctly, Lake McIllwaine (now Lake Chivero) was badly affected, so much so, that, from an aeroplane, the lake looked like firm, flat ground, good enough to land on. .... The weed must have caused a lot of damage, especially to fish life, but very little detail about it was released in the news. .. I do remember visiting Blair Park, in one of Harares northern suburbs (Mount Pleasant, probably), where there was a large body of water, completely infested with this weed. (*If anyone remembers Blair Park, it was park in the middle of a suburb, and home to lots of geese, who didnt like visitors.) Anyway, I was wondering.. *What are the botanical and common names of the weed? *What was the extent of damage caused by this weed? *What sort of preventative measures can be taken to stop this weed from taking hold? *How can this weed be killed, or gotten rid of, without harming other aquatic life? Web-links to info would be great. Thanks in advance.
