For the past few weeks, my dad has noticed a group of turtles sunbathing on the banks of the swamp on Green Street, just across from the police station. While these photos may show as many as five, he has seen up to eight at a time. Theyre much smaller than the snapping turtle we once saw in the marshy avenue next to Lexington Avenue, and its likely they are painted turtles. They seem to have pretty regular sunbathing hours between 7 and 10 in the morning, so if youre in that area during that time, try and get a glimpse of them - just be careful not to scare them, as theyre quite skittish! FYI, in the early 20th century, a location on Green Street was considered for the the Mount Kisco Public Library, but was rejected because the area was thought to be too swampy. A pretty good judgment Id say!
