For the past two days, I have been in 100 degree heat, in 50 pounds of kit running up and down lanes, with minimal sleep, eating MREs, and adhering to a demanding 16 hour workload. As I sat there soaked in sweat, physically drained, mentally exhausted, and putting up with a terrible headache, someone make a joke about being a dirty knuckle dragger, and I had an epiphany. At that moment, I realized how lucky and proud I am to be called a grunt. Its a blessing to work with such a dedicated group of individuals. No matter how hard the task or stupid the situation, my brothers cling to each other and overcome. We are given shitty conditions, little time to prepare, and gear made by the lowest bidder, and we not only embrace the suck but we thrive in it. The most beautiful part of this realization is that they dont do it for themselves; they do it for you. Of course they do it for their loved ones, for their comrades, but they also do it for you. Yes, you, the random stranger who they will probably never meet. They might not fully understand why they are doing it, but they make it their own and conquer it. These men could be doing so much more with their lives; chasing dreams and careers, but instead they choose to put their wants and needs on hold and are sacrificing their bodies, their God given talents, and their youth so that you may live your life to the fullest; never let these guys down. Today is 9/11. Please take a moment to give thanks to a special breed of rough men who never get enough credit: Infantrymen. For the past 13 years you have been fighting, killing, putting yourself through the pain and hardships of war, and even making the ultimate sacrifice so that my loved ones, my friends, and my family can live their lives in any way they choose without fear. You have taught me the true meaning of sacrifice, how to be strong, and the definition of selflessness. You have made me a better man. God Bless you and may he forever watch over you and remember you dearly if and when you are called Home. Its a privilege and an honor. You will never be forgotten.
