I originally joined Facebook so I could play “Words With Friends” with my sister-in-law. However, after two years on this social website, I’ve seen how it’s used to inspire, teach, share ideas, and bond with people who have the same interests. I tried to find a site for the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and was unable to find a site sanctioned by the Society utilizing the full potential of Facebook. I think we can use a Facebook page as a way for the Vincentians in District 6 to become better Vincentians while getting to know each other with more interaction than the few meetings a year we have with each other. I see the daily interaction as follows: Sunday – I would post the weekly Gospel, Vincentian Meditation and Discussion Question. Vincentians can then share their thoughts on the discussion question with each other. This would be similar to how we do it on Monday night. I feel this is important to do especially for members of groups who don’t practice this regularly at their meetings. Monday – Mentor Monday – I would post a quote by or life snippet about Saint Vincent, Frederic Ozanam etc. The quote would reflect, and/or the life snippet would reflect, a Vincentian attitude. Then the members would be invited to share their thoughts or quotes that inspire them. This would educate the Vincentians about the people whose lives St. Vincent de Paul is based on and inspire us to be more like them. Tuesday – This would be a good day to post a Vincentian Rule out of that book we got a year or two ago. This would serve as a reminder to members. A discussion could take place where members can answer others’ questions on how to adhere to the rules. This is an important exercise for us Vincentians. It would keep what’s expected of us front and center. Wednesday – What We Do Wednesday – Members would be invited to share a program they have implemented. Share a clever solution to a situation while maintaining client privacy. Members would be able to ask for advice on how to handle something again, while maintaining privacy. This is a good give and take exercise because we sometimes get stuck in a rut on how things are done. Thursday – Vincentian Virtue - I would list one virtue each week. This would remind us of what we strive for as a Vincentian. Members can be asked to share a story about someone they witnessed portraying that virtue in real life. This would help all of us start looking for the good in people. Friday – Prayers of Petitions and Thanksgiving will be presented on Fridays. Members will be able to list all those people we can pray for as a group and share the miracles of prayers answered. Saturday – Get to know your fellow Vincentian. A silly question can be asked, something like your favorite ice cream flavor and why. Members can answer the question as a fun way of getting to know each other. There would also be a spotlight member. A Vincentian we invite the previous week to share their personal story and why they love being a Vincentian. The member can give us there answer on Saturday. Every day – As a fluid program, members are welcome to post and bring up something they want to share with other members whenever they wish.
