For the past two years, my daughter Rosa and some of her friends - TopicsExpress

For the past two years, my daughter Rosa and some of her friends have organized the Girls Read for Girls read-a-thon, inspired by Malala Yousafzai. Girls (and boys are welcome too) in Grades 1 - 8 get pledges, show up at the Brooklyn Public Library, have a short program, read for a couple of hours, collect pledges ... and then contribute the money to an organization that supports girls education around the world. In the past, theyve raised money for Women for Afghan Women, and Developments in Literacy. This year (excited about Malalas winning the Nobel Prize), they are raising for The Malala Fund, which supports girls education and empowerment programs in Pakistan, Nigeria, Jordan, and Kenya. This years Girls Read for Girls 2014 event will take place next weekend: Sunday, November 16th from 1 - 4 p.m. Brooklyn Public Library - Central Branch (Grand Army Plaza) You can learn more, register, and contribute at: girlsreadforgirls.tumblr They have recruited some great co-sponsors this year, including Anne Frank Center USA, Arab American Association of New York, Brooklyn Community Foundation, Center for Anti-Violence Education, Girls Be Heard, and Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. And they have some special guests coming as well. If you have any questions (or want to register, but have trouble doing so on the website, which can be a little finicky), you can email brooklyngirlsreadforgirls@gmail Thanks for helping Rosa and her friends spread the word!
