For the record...everything thats taking place in Ferguson is unfortunate. I would love it if we could live in world that was color blind and everyone respected one another based on the content of their character and not the color of the skin (thank you Dr. King). However, thats simply not the reality that we live in. With that being said, heres a different angle Ive conversed with some of my COIs about in the past few days... Its a fact that 2/3rd of the population in Ferguson is black (theyre the majority). Its also a fact that nearly 100% of its elected officials (police chief, commissioners, justices, etc) are not black (theyre the minority). Its great that theyre marching and protesting, but in all honesty, if they really want change, they need to use the civil right that those before them bleed and died for which is the right to vote. The entire situation could change for the majority if they voted for elected officials who had their best interest at heart. Case in point, the chief of Police. Mike Brown did not deserve to be murdered and left in the street for 4 to 5 hours. It was inhumane and a tragedy. Ferguson police has also done a horrible job with showing transparency and is clearly doing everything they can to protect their own. Furthermore, historically Ferguson has had strong racial tension and its extremely unfortunate and unfair that the blacks in the community have been racially profiled and treated unjustly. However, the majority of the population in Ferguson (the black community) also needs to take personal responsibility for some of the injustice that is taking place in their community. They have the controlling vote to put the people they want in office. Would this have stopped Mike Brown from being shot? I do not know. However, if there was a black police chief, Im pretty sure that out of the 53 police officers in Ferguson, there would be more than just 3 officers out of the 53 officers on the force that are black. Im pretty sure that the extremely disproportionate amount of black arrest vs white arrest would be different. Once again, as much as I wish this wasnt about race, it is.... It would be great if we werent classified as black or white, but simply american, but were not... Ferguson, you have the power to make change in your community (and looting is not the way to make it happen). Go vote. Put people in power to not only write legislation, but also protect and serve in a matter that is just and unbiased. If we were playing a card game I think its safe to say they have a full house. With that said, to the black community in Ferguson....your move.....
