For those arguing over whether humanity is basically good or basically evil, heres a fun little mental exercise for you: Suppose a box could be put around the Middle East and inside it everyone suddenly had complete amnesia and all records of history disappeared. How well would the people get along if no one and nothing was telling them that they SHOULDNT get along? If there were no religious texts to cause division, no history books to show past conflicts and injustices, no parents training their children to fear or hate some other group, would there be what we see today? Of course not. Because this kind of division is 100% LEARNED; it cannot be figured out any other way, because it is a purely man-made and man-perpetuated problem. The same is true of government in general: if the whole world had amnesia and no record of past stupidities, people could figure out all over again a whole lot about physics, and economics, and psychology--things that exist in the real world, and that can be measured, studied, and understood, without the need for blind faith. But no one would figure out that some fat guy in a red suit gives out presents to all the good children one day in winter. Because he doesnt. And no one would figure out that a handful of sociopaths in the area now known as Washington, DC have some magical divine right to rule over a few hundred million other people. Because they DONT. The only evidence that government is real and legitimate is that people are TOLD that it is. They take it on faith. If people only accepted ideas for which there is actual evidence, instead of basing their world view on crap-some-people-just-made-up, this would be a very different world.
