For those familiar with the classic film, Phantom Of The Opera - TopicsExpress

For those familiar with the classic film, Phantom Of The Opera (1925), it may come as some surprise that the version you have been watching is not the original 1925 edition, but a 1930 re-release made up entirely of second takes and alternate camera angles. This video provides a nice comparison between the two versions during the famous unmasking scene. The editing in the 25 version is far more concise, and Chaney looks twice as ghoulish with proper lighting. The 1930 unmasking is a discarded shot that was lit specifically for technicolor, so the contrast is all wrong in black and white.
