For those not following our blogsite at spudracer.blogspot, we have arrived in Madang, PNG at the site of the Pacific Orientation Course and have started our 12 week training to help teach us Tok Pisin (the local trade language), and also very importantly to learn the PNG culture(s). After 7-8 weeks of training, the class culminates with a 4 week village encounter where were are dropped off in a village to use our new language and survival skills. Once back, we then debrief and within a week head back to Ukarumpa, much the wiser I hope! Today was our first chance to show our swimming skills (a requirement for the course), Jenny was able to swim a whole mile without stopping in the allotted time, and her husband swam 1.9 miles without stopping before time ended. I almost feel obligated to tell you tall tales of how unbearably hot and humid it is, how poorly were eating, and how weve all gotten jungle rot on our feet, but I honestly feel more like weve been transported from the USA to paradise here in Madang. Many of my photos could easily be mistaken for island paradise postcards from anywhere in the south pacific. We are all doing well, eating well, and exercising very well. The girls started school here at POC and have kids in their class ranging from 4 years old up to 16 years old. POC is not as bad as we had feared, so were going to let the secret out! One of our neighbors in the dorm were staying in is Korean. He sings his kids to sleep every night and it almost always puts me to sleep as well. What a wonderful way to drift off to sleep. Check out our blog to see the photos... Saturday we will be going on a family hike in the morning, then a planned trip to downtown Madang. We hope to post a blog when we get back that night. Thank you so much team members for getting us here. I was a little apprehensive the other night around 12:30am, but God reassured me that we are exactly where He wants us to be, and He is right here with us watching over us. There is no where we can go where we will no longer be under His protective care. Thanks Papa!
