For those of us who experience migraines, we’re all too familiar with the pounding, throbbing pain and the tag-along symptoms of nausea and sensitivity to light and noise. What many non-migraine sufferers don’t know is that visual symptoms – bright, flashing dots, wavy lines, and temporary blindness – are usually the first sign of a migraine. Even more surprising, not all migraines are alike – retinal or eye migraines can occur with or without an accompanying headache, but they can be just as painful. Retinal migraines, also known as ocular migraines, have the same causes as classic migraines with inflammatory substances being released deep inside the brain and around the blood vessels of the head and brain. One major difference is that ocular migraines only affect the vision of one eye. People who suffer from ocular migraines usually have a family history of migraine headaches.
