For those of you going to Feed My Starving Children tomorrow: Jewelry Policy Jewelry and other accessories present the potential for foreign objects to accidentally fall into our lifesaving meals. Due to FDA requirements, FMSC volunteers will need to remove all jewelry and/or accessories before packing. Foreign objects in food can cause choking, tooth-breakage, and other problems. FMSC does not have a screening device like a metal detector or an x-ray machine to detect possible contamination of our finished product. No jewelry is permitted in the packing room, labeling areas, Warehouse Crew Area or when inspecting raw ingredients. Jewelry includes earrings, watches, rings, necklaces, pins, brooches, etc. Wedding bands are permitted, however if your band has a stone you will be required to wear a glove. Medical alert bracelets/necklaces may be worn. Jewelry FAQ: Will there be a safe place for me to put my jewelry at FMSC? Can I put my jewelry in my pocket? I’ve volunteered at FMSC in the past and was allowed to wear jewelry, why can’t I anymore? If my earrings will be covered by the hairnet FMSC makes me wear, can I leave them in? Will there be a safe place for me to put my jewelry at FMSC? No, please leave your jewelry at home. FMSC will not be responsible for the safekeeping of any volunteer’s jewelry nor will we provide a storage area. Can I put my jewelry in my pocket? No loose jewelry should be put into pockets. However, FMSC will have zipper bags that may be used for putting your jewelry in and then it can be placed in your pocket. I’ve volunteered at FMSC in the past and was allowed to wear jewelry, why can’t I anymore? In order to comply with FDA standards for food manufacturing plants, FMSC needed to make this change in policy. The quality of our food is very important to us and this updated policy will help to insure that foreign objects will not contaminate our food. If my earrings will be covered by the hairnet FMSC makes me wear, can I leave them in? No, you still must remove your earrings.
