For those of you just catching up, here is a summary of the week that was for Birds Queensland. For the past eight days Birds Queensland has dedicated a post to one of our state’s 48 bird species and subspecies classified as endangered or vulnerable. In the lead up to the State election, Birds Queensland will continue to dedicate a post to one of these threatened species to alert and remind everyone, including the political candidates for the State election, of the urgent and pressing need for much more to be done to preserve our natural heritage. Ongoing habitat degradation, inappropriate fire regimes and uncontrolled feral animals have been major factors in the decline of these wonderful birds. The increase in severe weather patterns as a result of climate change is already placing further stresses on threatened bird populations with the potential to cause further decline in our wonderful birds. We need a real commitment from our political leaders if we are to put a stop to the rising number of bird species threatened with extinction. The next featured bird is another example of how severe weather events associated with climate change combined with continued habitat destruction threaten the survival of many species.
