For those of you who are expecting Windows to disappear: Take a look at this glorified iPad from Lenovo. It is running full Windows 8 - with many standard windows programs that have been upgraded to support touch. They operate much like iPad apps. At the same time it runs all your other windows software so you lose nothing when you start using it. This is what Steve Jobs would have produced if he were around today. Its also the hardware that guys like me will use with Ubuntu and Linux programs that have been upgraded to respond to touch. Read carefully the warnings before you run out and buy one (though theyre relatively cheap at about $1k.) The hardware is waaaay ahead of the software at this moment and you might not get any relief until Windows 8.2 (which is not too far away.) Still, the only real problem in my mind is that they dont sell these with a stylus (yet!) Thats another little issue that comes from the success of the Apple Marketing team and the work of Steve Jobs - but Im sure it will fade soon enough. The market is starting to enjoy new and powerful tablets with a stylus. You can find relatively inexpensive tablets in stores today such as the $400 8 Galaxy Note from Samsung. People are starting to see the value of that stylus - finally! arstechnica/gadgets/2014/03/lenovo-yoga-2-pro-review-you-say-you-want-resolution/ Another point that needs making is that apps represent a step away from the web and back to the Client-Server model that was popular in the mid 90s for enterprise software (sometimes called Fat Clients.) In my mind this is very good (even though Ive seen really bad code from young people who dont understand wireless networks.) Unfortunately thats too big a subject for a lunch-time post! p.s. Did I mention that the cost of mobile development is dropping really, really fast? And the new tools produce fully compiled programs - no more apps, just working multi-platform programs like we had in the good old days with full Touch and Stylus support. David Chernofsky
