For those of you who didnt make the group medi on Monday night, we discussed this new research on the different types of meditation and how effective they are (see article below). In a nutshell, it seems that non-directive meditation styles that uses a tool like a mantra, but that allow the mind to wander (ie Vedic Meditation) are more effective than concentrative approaches where one attempts to still the mind by focusing on the breath, or indeed a mantra. Non-directive meditation activate the parts of the brain that control self thought and the processing of emotions (see lots of activity in the brains on the right below), whereas concentrative meditations produce little more activity in those areas than simple resting (see less active brains on the left) If youre still reading this and are not absolutely confused, to simplify this good news for students of Bondi Meditation: The research suggests that the technique you use is more effective than a lot of other, popular meditation techniques. It also reinforces our teaching that to optimize our meditation experience we need to minimize concentration and any attempts to control our meditation. If youd like to chat more about this and maybe get some help to make your practice more effortless and non-directive message me and we can get together.
