For those of you who do not study ethnicity, Robert Plant is an archetypal Saxon. Now identical to but far surpassing in fame, the King of Rohan (splinter group of those tribes which descended from Scandinavia to the great plains of Central Europe and founded the Gothic kingdom. At the time Tolkien wrote the Rohan section of the The Lord of the Rings, he had been studying the Gothic language for some years. As a boy he had loved and studied the story of the American West and Plains Indians as well. The rather extensive treatment the makers of the film give this section of the book in not unwarranted. I mention this more if you read the great book,.. and Robert Plant himself read Tolkien as a boy and was so enchanted he wrote Tangerine, and Thank You, and Ramble On out of that ethos. This video of one of Plants Harvest Songs is not about human relationships initially but about the mythic characters who represent its processes. This video, if you see it through, is one of the more personal ones I seen featuring the man who wrote The Stairway to Heaven and stands among the twelve greatest Legends in his field.
